The New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders are teaming up to build a new soccer-specific stadium in Jersey City, N.J., to replace their old home.
The $1.1 billion facility will host the New Jersey Red Bulls for the 2018 season.
The team was scheduled to open in 2019.
The Devils, who have moved from their home in Garden City to Hudson County, New Jersey, have been without a new home since opening the new home in 2010.
The Islanders opened in 2016.
“We are thrilled to announce that we are partnering with the New England Revolution and the Garden City Community Association on a new, state-of-the-art facility that will host both the New Orleans Saints and New York City FC during the 2019 season,” said Bill Murray, president of the New Garden City Alliance, the owners of the Red Bulls and Islanders.
“The stadium will provide a perfect venue for both the Red and the Islanders, providing fans with an exciting new venue to watch our team play and to watch the incredible players and coaches we have here.”
The team will open in 2017 at the GardenCity Community Center in Jersey Town.
The Red Bulls will open the new stadium on Aug. 1, 2018.
The Isles will open on Sept. 4, 2018, at the Jersey City Community Center.
The Red Bulls are currently home to the New Balance soccer team, which is located at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New York.
The Yankees, who own the New Yankee Stadium, are expected to join the team in 2019, though they have not officially announced the timing.
The Islanders, who are playing in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, are slated to begin play in 2019 in a new facility that they hope will host more teams in the future.
