Cameron Village, Somerset, has been at the centre of the media spotlight since it was announced last week that a man from the town had been found dead in a cave, with his remains cremated.
Sophie Smithson, the director of Somerset’s National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, said the village was “one of the most under-researched places on the planet” with no missing person reports.
But it is not the only place the community has been on the radar.
She said the community had been put on the list of areas that need extra police resources in a bid to keep people safe and prevent them becoming a victim of a crime.
“We’ve got a small but significant community in Somerset and they’re a small, independent village,” Ms Smithson said.
“It is a very isolated community that has no network of services.”
They’re not just isolated, they’re in a very remote area and it is a real concern to us.
“A Facebook group set up in April 2017, The Lost People’s Facebook page, has garnered more than 3,000 people, with members posting photos and videos of their own missing person sightings.
The Lost People are part of the Lost People Network, which has more than 500 members, and the group has been collecting information from the community about the disappearance of their loved ones.
Ms Smithson told 7.30 it was important that people were aware that their family was not alone and that anyone with information about missing people should contact the Missing Person Unit on 131 444.”
They are out there. “
And of course, we’re not going to be able to solve them all.
They are out there.
They may be in hiding or they may be dead.
We just want to make sure that we’re working with people to help solve these cases.”
A spokesperson for the Missing Persons Unit said there were no new cases of missing people in Somerset, with a total of 1,600 cases.
The Missing People’s Network is not a government agency, but Ms Smithsons group has worked with police to ensure there was more community involvement in identifying missing people.
